Our latest issue has gotten a lot of attention, both negative and positive-- based entirely on the cover:

Am I worried about it?
Not at all.
This is an alternative paper, and a lot of bitching, slobbering, and whimpering from the conservative-types just kind of comes along with the territory.
It never ceases to amaze me that some groups of people feel that alternative voices should not be allowed to be heard.
If you're concerned about our cover, and what we were trying to accomplish by printing it, I'll tell you this:
Our artists have creative control over their work.
We don't believe in stifling them or peering over their shoulders.
When we tell them that they have conceptual control over the cover-- we mean it.
We would really only step in if the concept went far beyond the boundaries of taste, or was of a racist nature.
In terms of tastelessness, though, there's a lot of room for interpretation. My idea of what is tasteless might be different than yours.
So who, in terms of the Random Times, determines what is tasteless and what is not?
I do.
And personally, I don't feel that Jesus wearing a Santa cap is tasteless.
It's an additional statement to a debate that has been underway for a long, long time-- the over-commercialization of the Christmas holiday. It's about the muddled lines between Christ and Santa Claus. It's about the confusion surrounding what the hell the holiday is supposed to mean anymore.
Some people might feel alienated from the issue, at first glance at the paper-- and that cannot be helped.
A publication cannot appeal to everyone.
Golf magazines and Christian papers don't appeal to ME.
But do you see me bitching about their existence? No.
Their voice is constitutionally protected. And printing their paper is a protected right.
And I will stand for their rights just as quickly as I will stand for my own.
And in the future issues of the Random Times, you're going to see a lot of covers that are very tame, and in no way are controversial.
But then... you might also see some that you think are tasteless.
And all that we at Random Times can do, is hope that even if people don't pick the paper up, based on its cover, that they can still celebrate our constitutional right to have a voice.
Peace to all.

I agree with n.l.
YAY!!!
First 2 issues by you all kicked ass!
Good luck for the new year!
Should I mention Mas/Bakotopia in here to get things started?
Thanks for the kind words, DW-- much appreciated.
Another thing I appreciate about you, is your neutrality. That's a rarity.
As for Mas & Bakotopia-- I have no problems with them at all, as they seem to be ran by good people.
Just kiddin' about the mas/bakotopia. I dig 'em. I just used them for my point in N.L.'s blog and it got a little twisted. Interpretation becomes the bigger deal I guess, gets out of control too.I forget that sometimes when I write.Lesson in the learning.
Oh well, that probably didn't make sense either!
I do enjoy all the cool media's this town has to offer, but there are alot of voids too, so I hope your's stays afloat. Happy New Year!dave
Well, I've always said everybody's got a little asshole in them.
I didn't care for the cover and I bitched about it a little bit.
My perogative, but your paper... you win.
You're welcome for the mention on my page, and my answer is yes. Let's burn em, it's cold outside.
Think of it as an alternative to high electricity bills... See, now you're still within the scope of your mission.

The great thing about freedom of speech is that somebody can publish something that is totally disrespectful to Jesus, but somebody else can come along just as freely proclaim to the publishing party: Jesus loves you anyway! A picture may paint a thousand words, but the love of Jesus paints a picture that words could never begin to express. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I absolutely loved the fact that two opionions on the christmas subject were placed together on the same page, and they were both from completely different sides of the track, fricken fabulous.
If only radio stations and television would do that.....
DW: You make TOTAL sense, man.
HEATH: I've got a few extra... and even a lighter! :D
ANONYMOUS: I am told that Jesus loves me no matter what, so... well... I suppose he'll understand me living a lifetime of not believing in him when I die... and forgive me for it. :D
SILENCE CLUB: You are the first person to mention that to me, either online or otherwise. That's something I was personally proud of... so I'm glad someone took notice. Thanks!
...joined the blogger set, eh?
Smart move!
:D
